Thumbs down Global Warming and shit.

Road building and transport:Friends of the Earth Campaigns

Makes me laugh right, lot of stuff spouted about finding alternatives to cars and shit although FOE don't actually seem to be doing much. Also the link below shows how you should drive to cut pollution!

ETA : During the Journey

I do that most days anyway! Unless I'm going to be late, or its a really hot day!

If everyone stopped driving their cars for one day, and we all used public transport, this country'd be fucked big time. And for some jobs, use of cars, personal transport is essential such as construction, hgv's and the list goes on.

Rant over.

Transport is responsible for about 14% of total CO2 output into the environment.

That includes all transport, i.e. trucks, trains and airplanes... I heard something like one jumbo jet puts out as much pollution on take off as all the cars on the M1 for a whole hour!

Cars really aren't the main problem. its just easy to target them as everyone has them and sees them and can be convinced (read brain washed) into thinking they are evil.

People dont think about the HUGE refridgerators housed in all the supermarkets where they get their foods from and all the lorries that fill them up with food day in day out. One tiny example.

indeed.

if everyone in britain swapped their car for a V8 land rover, it would increase worldwide carbon emissions by about 0.2%.

china is building something like 600 coal fired power stations over the next 10 years.

just a handfull of those will produce the same carbon emissions as every car on the road in britain.

easy to blame china, but why do they need all those power stations? to run the factories producing plastic tat to ship halfway round the world to go in our mcdonalds meals and christmas crackers.

the problem requires a change in the way we live our lives in general, not just making our transport more expensive.

There are several answers for us all to cut down our emissions

1. how about solar pannels these can and are in other countries used for heating hot water and power?

2. why do we all have to travel to work? why do empolyers insist on us traveling to the office when its not neccassary?

3. why do empolyers insist on 9-5 for office hours when flexi time would mean less jams as people would get to the office when it suits them.

4. why does the govenment not insist on point 1 when having new houses built and make grants available for this?

5. why does the govenment not tax companies that do not implement point 2 when it is not available for all the office staff?

6. why is the govenment not insisting that petrol companies sell bio fuels ? sugar can fuel has been available in central and south america for 30 years!!!!!

imo these points would go along way to improving co2 emissions. But when you have the USA, China and India that persist in polluting the earths atmosphere to the degree that they do. one small insignificant country such as the UK has no chance in influencing the worlds govenments. all the politicians want to do in the uk is tax the bloody motorist for as much as they can get out of them, and not to help the motorist, (as contary to what politicians believe and friends of the earth who i suspect most of them drive cars) most motorists really do care about the enviroment and yes if co2 free fuel was available I believe most motorists would happily buy it! But we all rely on the oil companies and unfortunatly the oil companys would charge 2-3 times more for it than regular petrol and the govenments of this country would continue to do nothing because of taxation.... ce la vie . Nothing will change and in 20 years time we will all still be discussing this very point and by then it will all be too late.

the 'motorists' tag irritates me too. it's not like everyone decides at 830 in the morning " ah, lovely day, think I'll go out in the car for leisurely drive for no real reason".

these 'motorists' are doctors, nurses, firemen, policemen, teachers... everyone just trying to go and make an honest wage.
