Digi dash - replacement
Digi dash - replacement

Digi dash - replacement

I bought my phase 1 r19 chammy with a slightly blotchy trip computer. However, I had a perfect screen from my phase 2 hatch so the plan was to install it, here goes:

The Problem:

Blotchy screen:

Removing the instrument cluster:

Pull off the speedo reset knob.

Remove the two T20 screws holding the flat black fascia above the dials. Once thats off you can get the top two T10 screws holding the instrument cluster in.

Remove the upper and lower steering column shroud (4 T20 screws from underneath.) This will help with access and also lets you undo the two bottom screws that are holding the cluster. Now having said that of the two cars I've done this to neither has had those screws in.

The cluster comes out bottom first so get a flat blade underneath the bottom lip and carefully ease it forward. I had a lot of resistance from the speedo cable, I needed to give it a firm pull. Tilt the cluster up and reach underneath it and gently lever off the speedo cable without breaking the white tabs. Then it should be easy to remove the wiring. There are 6 plugs, go easy.

Unit removed, six plugs behind there plus speedo cable:

The Great Swaparoony:

The phase 2 unit was disassembled, this involved no more than pulling off the speedo reset knob then undoing the 8 screws round the back edge. Hence the clear cover can be removed and you can get to the 2 screws either side of the trip computer display. You can see these in the photo below.

Good screen in the phase 2 dash:

So undo those two screws and the display unit slides up and out of the main dash.

This is the unit to swap over:

Refitting it into the other dash is obviously a 'reversal of removal':

Replacing the instrument cluster is pretty straightforward, it's best to reattach the plugs in the opposite order to removing them then finish up with clipping the speedo cable back on. Quick test to make sure it all lights up, then fix things down.

Hey presto, clear display again:

The trip computer unit from Renault is about £300 and I'm sure perfect displays must be getting quite rare now
