Problem: Heater fan has stopped working unless its on full.
Not to good really is it.
It can be caused by 2 things, a melted plug into the heater control panel (not so common) or a failed heater fan rheostat.
So what is this rheostat thingy?
Bascially its a switched resistor. Its mounted in the heater fan casing, theres 2 coils of wire on it, different length thus giving different resistances thus fan speed. Its mounted in the fan housing in the hope that air passing over it will cool the coils down to prevent them failing.
Righty to get to it you need to remove the heater fan housing. This is in the scuttle area under the windscreen.
2 10mm bolt either side of the housing hold it in, to remove it work it over to the passenger side then twist it tound and jiggle it out. Its awkward but it will come out
this is what it looks like when removed.
the rheostat is mounted on the drivers side of the fan housing, in this pic its been removed, to remove it bend the tags out carefully then pull it out, also dissconnect and un-hook the wires from the casing.
this is the rheostat removed
nothing exciting really. Sometimes they are covered in leaves etc which can account for their failure, if you have removed it just for a look them make sure its clean before re-fitting.
this is the plug on the back of the rheostat
the pins can corrode so make sure they are clean and clear from corrosion.
If a new Rheostat is required then this is the renault part number and price
77 01 034 874 LOOM HEATER R19 £24.95
refitting is the reverse of removal.
That should be the fan behaving itself once again.
On renault 5's etc the fan may be different, it will look like a real fan instead of the later centrifugal fan as the pics show.
