the shafts suitable for the ABS systems have toothed rings on them in order for the ABS computer to detect the speed of the wheels (and whether they have locked up).
Shafts with the ABS reluctor rings *are* suitable for non-ABS cars though. There are two versions of ABS which came as options on the r19, Bendix (til 1992 iirc) and Bosch (from then on). Of these the only suitable option would be Bosch, the Bendix system was never designed fail-safe and units are notorious for packing up, mine did only recently! Installing ABS will be a whole world of pain - you'd need everything including the ABS driveshafts I mentioned, ABS sensors for the wheels, cables from the hubs to the ABS system, the ABS loom, computer, hulking great servo unit. I'm not sure if you can keep over the master cylinder from the non-ABS unit but I don't think so... basically a lot of work almost certainly involving engine removal. Out of interest, why the big brake conversion? The 16v version brakes are not bad for the size car. Are you upgrading the power output? |

Mmmmm, Might leave it non ABS then, sounds like a bitch for nothing better than a trained right foot.
As for the brake conversion, I am planning on upping the power at some stage with a full engine re-build with a shed load of new parts going into it. Grp A Forged Pistons Forged Con-rods L&B, knife-edged crank Cams & pulleys Gasflowed Head & Knife-edged ports Custom ECU Re-Map And maybe a custom made manifold and down pipe. Want the brakes done first though and I need something more substancial behinde the rims if anything for the look of them. Big brakes look amazing. But all the engine work Is at least a year or 2 down the line as it's going to cost upwards of 4 grand. And there are other things I want done first like suspension etc.... Handling and stopping first, Big power later!!! |
