Well guys thought I'd provide an update on my hunt for a car. I had a look at a hatch yesterday, it was actually a late 5 door phase 2, described by the owner good condition & very good to drive. I asked about general condition and rust and was told there was only a spot of rust on 1 door and was really nice condition. So I travelled there to view and was met with a car which had rust on every panel, roof, tailgate, doors, sills, extensive rust on both arches that continued into the sills, bald / perished tyres, really tappety engine (do they have hydraulic lifters or shims?), condensation in the headlights, broken rear lights, obvious front knock badly repaired, poorly sprayed rear bumper. Coolant looked like it had rust in it, asked if the owner had ever changed the oil - no was the answer. Quite bad rust on all the brake discs so clearly had been sitting there for sometime. I didn't even bother driving it or looking under the car complete waste of time and money to go and view the car. The owner said they'd only drop as low as £500, it was up for £600 which I thought was an ok starting point for a car with an MOT until early next year, a bit of tax, and supposedly in nice condition. I didn't want to insult them and tell them it was scrap and worth about £50! I shall keep the hunt on but if this is the condition of most R19s I will probably look for something else - I spend enough time welding my Strada to have to look after another car and I thought Fiat Stradas were bad (I've got 2) but this was almost as bad as the one I have for spares, that's been off the road for 10 years!

Yeah I was dissapointed with the car.

For the last few years I've been into Fiats and Alfas which as you all know have a reputation for rusting to buggery, but that was in the 80's or earlier. Since 1988 Fiat hasn't really had an issue with rust, when the Tipo was introduced, fully galvanised and about 100kg heavier because of it, it's rare to find one with significant rust, most of it results from crash damage.

Anyway this 1994/95 Renault was a serious rust bucket of the kind I didn't think existed in the mid 90's!

Weirdly with the R19, the newer the car, the rustier it usually is.

Ph1's and early ph2's don't tend to rust as much as the later ph2's

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the offer but not convinced the car is for me. I was looking for a car with MOT/Tax that doesn't need HG doing etc.
Cheers Roasty

hi mate have a check on my ph1 its a had fair bit of work done i have replaced almost everything on the car in the last 2.5 yrs iv had it, its taken a wee bump on the front passenger wing but on the whole its a good solid car to start with, a coat of paint and a couple of small rusty patches to be sorted i have 1300 quid worth of reciepts in the last 2 yrs for parts alone and the car lay off road for a yr as i was banned. it has 18s with tyres that have only covered 500 miles and a £1000 of pioneer sounds in it!
