An American man accidentally shot dead his wife while trying to install satellite TV in their bedroom.

Ronald Long of Missouri did not own a drill, so he used his .22 calibre handgun to fire two shots into the wall of the room so that he could run a cable through from outside.

Mr Long's wife Patsy was standing outside the house when he fired the gun. She was hit by the second bullet and died from her injuries in hospital.

Police have not decided whether to charge Mr Long over her death.

Mr Long, 32, said he thought his wife and two sons were inside when he fired the handgun.

He had decided to use the gun, which he kept in the bedroom, after earlier attempts to make a hole in the wall had failed.

Mrs Long, who worked as a waitress, was given CPR by neighbours and transported to hospital by air ambulance, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police spokesman Major Robert Hills said: "Mr Long was under the impression that everybody was inside the residence, that he knew where everybody was at."

Maj Hills said a person involved in such a case normally would be charged with manslaughter, but that would be up to the prosecutor.

"Once we complete a diagram of the incident, we will be submitting everything to the prosecuting attorney and let him decide if he wants to press criminal charges."
