Sunroof?

Just read Neo's thread about the maxi, very impressive. I noted that the car he bought to build it with had no sunroof and that this was rare. Does anyone know why they are so few as mine doesn't have one either. Just curious really. Normally when a sports derived car has no sunroof it's because it's to be fitted with aircon but this isn't the case here. Thanks.

It's 449 blue and a 94,although it was originally a jersey car then imported to the uk in 95. Seems just like any other 19 16v bar the fact it has no sunroof. I had one ages ago and 2 td's since and they all had sunroofs. There is only one other locally and thats got one too. Wierd.

same goes for 2nt generation VW GTis rare w/o a sunroof(later models particularly) think mostly because people want lots of extras if they're going to pay more for a car, and most sporty cars have a higher price tag than the base models they're based on.

(my 1992 VW GTi was a non-sunroof model, but the previous owner had installed an after market one DOH!)

Makes sense. I've been doing motorsort for years, grass, hot rods, hillclimb, sprints etc and non sunroof cars are always more sought after. Thought about hillclimbing the 19 but the performance just isn't there to be competitive...yet. I can feel one of my engine swaps coming on. Fitted a 2.2 vtec from a prelude into an xr2i a few years back hmmmmmm i wonder.

The answer is quite simple, Renault shafted us, In the UK, 19s with a sunroof was standard trim, in Europe having a 19 with a sunroof was an option as the majority of European 19 16Vs got aircon as standard.
Fitting aircon as standard to UK models were more expensive to produce than having a sunroof fitted plus our climate is not exactly known for its hot sunny days.
I have never seen a UK 19 with aircon fitted but the holes for the aircon pipes are in place, filled with a black rubber bung by the expansion tank.
Renault also shafted the UK when they changed the 19 from the ph1 to the ph2, the European models had a nice new swoopy dash and new shape switches but to cut costs, they left the UK model of the 19 with the ph1 dash and switchs with the exception of the electric window switches (which is why they look different in style to the switches located in the dashboard) and the wiper/indicator/light stalks.
Of course the odd non sunroofed 19 made its way across to the UK but why they are not fitted with a sunroof? no idea lol
