Beemered out

A friend of a friends beemer started to jump out of reverse 1st and third. So I was asked to get it out for either a recon or renewal.

I said yes of course.

Anyway the car arrived and I had a look at it, W plate 2000 323i, had a look at the mileage. 200124 miles. Not bad.

The engine is superb but the box is goosed. The body is quite tidy but theres rust from stone chips and the headlights are the usual condensed state.

Anyway the jobs a bit of an annoying one. As you need to remove the exhaust and get the prop out of the way. Due to the fact its IRS the diffs bolted to the floor, so this means the sliding joints rather small. To small to allow the prop to come off the box. Teh props abve the exhaust heatshields so to get to it you have to get the exhaust off then the heatshields then the centre bearing and various crossmembers.

Anyway due to me being damn good I managed to get it out in 1.5 hrs, I was well impressed with myself.

Anyway the box came out and its fooked. He wanted it reconned but due to the fact its had no oil and its rattling meant new box time.

So got one this morning £125 bargain! Anyway got it and took the old one to compare its the same, but later on I noticed a difference. More than that later.

Anyway the old box

the new one, stripped of the bracketry etc

tools and brackets, release arm and bolts etc that came off

the gear stick and its remote rod

The mounting for the clutch slave on the new box

the mounting on the original box, yes its different, its about 2 inches further in!

This means I have to use the slave we got with the new box, which is in great condition apart from the oil all over it. I will blast it down later to get it blinging again , this means its clean and I stay clean fitting it.

I was hoping not to have to do the slave but cest la vie. Its not difficult but it can be messy.

Anyway where I done the work

Not much room! Note exhaust, stainless steel all the way through and 1 piece, its the original system to. Its also rather heavy!

I changed the site settings to make uploading the image non-compulsory. Maybe the latest round of upgrades threw things out of kilter.
