Project Escort van

Well, it's a van I bought for work. The £800 I got for the blue Vectra paid for this and a night out so I can't complain.

Anyway as Escort's go this doesn't seem to bad for the money, 1 years' MOT just put on and tax until January next year.

There's one or two niggly problems, the handbrake needs adjusting as the handbrake comes right up, the indicators don't self-cancel and there's a bush gone on the gearstick that stops it self-centering. If I'm being finicky then the fuel guage is a bit 'fluttery' as in when stationary it'll read say a quarter-tank, then you move off and the needle dips down to about the 1/8th mark.... a bit annoying.

Anyway, I did a very primitive economy test by running it down as far as I dare on the guage, fuelling up with a tenner of diesel and then driving it for as far as I dare.

The result is 90 miles to £10 which I am thoroughly chuffed with, a £10 of petrol would normally only get me about 55/60 miles in the Vectra.

Had it up on the ramps and it's not got any rot on it and it's never been welded either, so I've done rather well. The arches and bottom of the rear doors are pretty immaculate to.

All in all a good buy, doesn't clean up to bad and plenty of room for all my kit.

Well this one has done quite high mileage (149K) but it feels strong as a horse... it certainly pulls harder than the 3 others I've driven on the firm and they are all on newer plates with less mileage.

Yep, the temptation is there Mals but that would one of the main benefits of having this for work - the cost of getting there!

Speaking of fuel economy, I brimmed the tank Friday morning and reset the trip counter before having a few jobs to do which ended up taking me from Newark to Melton to Nottingham back to Newark, all in all an 85-mile trip once I got to the petrol station, took 7.54 litres to fill what had been used and the resulting economy based on the volumes was 52mpg.

The tank took just over 49 litres to fill, so based on 85 miles to 7 litres I estimate a full tank would give me 595 miles or so. It cost me £61 to fill so that's about 100 miles to £10, miles better (literally) than commuting in the Vectra!

I have a van, well it's a company van but my company are very flexible in the fact I can use it out of company hours, they even let me take it to the South of France to pick up the body kit for the Maxi

Here it is reflected in the glass of MC Racing's place in the South of France

It's also been a means of transport to get Neal's old engine up to Mick's to be put into Pete's ph1 cabby as well as transport my tools, Neal's engine crane and stand between mine and his a few times etc etc
