Phase 1 19 16V Hatch
Phase 1 19 16V Hatch
One Slow Project
Published by Soneji

Introduction

Here we have a Phase 1 Hatch. Car was bought on a whim, just wanted something to tinker with. Valvers seem to be that touch rarer now and want something to get me out the way of the misses, her probably thinking likewise. Anyway bought with no tax or ticket. Car was 'running' with the interior out with intent for it being a track car that fell through. It had failed an mot in 2006 and I'm not entirely sure what happened to it between then and now.

The clocks/dials were tied into place, and off to the local car park to loosen up the brakes. After that an uncomfortable ride home to the driveway. Was roughly a 500 mile round trip with my old man in the Omega.

Pics:

^ The only real corrosion 'problem', small bubbles elsewhere.

^ Plugs that came out, and cracked top mount. New single core bosch's in.

Some good points (other than bubbling) new toyos and battery:

It was driven back and the next day taken through to Glasgow without any work done for its MOT which it failed quite nicely on.

Car had attended FCS 06 and now no longer has the RSC on the windscreen. More on that later..

MOT Fail:

1. Nearside front position lamp not in GWO
2. Offside "
3. Offside front indicator not in GWO
4. Rear fog switch insecure
5. Hazard switch insecure
6. Nearside front seat belt retracting mechanism defective
7. Nearside CV joint gaiter slipped
8. Exhaust system mounting
9. Nearside rear (sill) suspension mounting area excessively corroded.
10. Emissions roughly double maximium limit.
11. Rear brake effeciency
12. Parking brake effeciency.

With advisory's:

Dash missing **DANGEROUS**
Rear flexi ferrules corroded.

Took some convincing to get the guy to test it with no dash in, he didn't seem to like that much. Cheers to chris for bending his arm.

Nah was a good trip actually, I had been on the lookout for a while there was a much cleaner one I was looking to get at the time, but that was a drive south of London so though sod it... proving too hard to rope people into taking me down.

Yeah I recon so. Sill welding, failed heavily on emissions.

Two years of it sat rotting in a garden thanks to a lad that couldn't really afford to run it. My guess. Its been very neglected/ragged. As I said, I have no real idea what it was used for between 2006 and now. Its actually not too bad, sills are getting chopped and welded tail end of next week

It WILL be restored however.

i really can't understabnd how people say thier cars are mint and show cars when I have scrapped worse. This is a general comment btw not a direct dig at this car.

You see it all the time, its mint go see it and the things hanging

I commented on this car on RSC a couple of years ago after I had seen it at the show pictured above. I had been led to believe it was a 'minter' and in my opinion it wasn't anything of the sort.

I got told off of course for making my opinions known at the time

when i said "show", i ment that it was entered into a show.

quite agree about with your comment about "mint", i certainly never believe anything of that age is "mint", even the red one of mine could never have been classed as "mint", i always had the intention of making it as close to "excellent condition" as i possibly could, same as the blue 'un im working on................... slowly,

hope this example regains some dignity

lol you said that about all the others I've had!

But no, with the lump like that I don't expect it to have great turn of speed. I have doubts as to whether this is my long term keeper but I'll see want to get it nicer either way because it gives me something to do. It has issues like most cars sat on grass for years would imho. The sills are rotten/crushed as youve seen, and that lump in it is far from good but it has been very very neglected which I will fix hopefully. Wait and see.

Agree what you mean with show cars tho. if it were a 'show car' in that pic its front bumper wouldn't be distorted as it still is now for example.

I think its been fucked about so much now that the word mint means 'seems ok, doesn't catch fire, might pass test with some work'

All my cars are mint

I was at ocean Terminal today (not sure if you know it, think you do), there was a collection of a dozon or so cars from some Scottish Car club or something. You pay to become a member 'and can drive whenever you like' a range of old E type jags, bgt, porches etc split between Edinburgh and Glasgow including new maseratis aparantly. After some shopping I stopped to have a look at the Ferrari 308 GTBi, on closser inspection it had rust bubbles all along the rear windows, the interior leather was absolutely hanging, one alloy looked a touch dinged. The lady came and ushered me away when I got down to have a look under.. that was a 'show car' in a shopping arena!
