Clio 16v The Resurrection

So it begins. . . the resurection of my black Clio 16v after spending over a year off the road.
Requires a large amount of work but intend to have it complete in just a few months.

Parts of the project include full engine transplant, clutch, manual steering rack conversion, suspension mounts, calipers, discs all round, driveshafts and whatever else i find when poking around.

DAY 01

First mission is to pull the old engine out, never done this on a clio 16v before so a bit of a challenge.
Bonnet off and away i go!
First step was out with the battery and air box, then began removing all coolant hoses, radiator and fan.

Next step is the dreaded wiring loom, fuel and vacuum hoses. Due to my poor memory, i thought it a good idea to tag every plug as i removed them, that way putting it all back together would be (or should be) much easier. Next was the exhaust downpipe, lot easier than i thought, removed the shield then could reach the nuts with an extension bar and universal joint from underneath.

With everything out of the way, next was to drain the gearbox and remove the driveshafts. To save time i simply removed the top hub to strut bolt which enabled me to tilt the hubs and move the shafts far enough to remove them whilst lifting. With the shafts out, wiring and hoses removed, all that was left was the engine mounts. Supporting the weight of the engine with the hoist i removed the digbone mount first then the top engine mount and finally the gearbox mount.

Finally, the lift begins!
Not a lot of room in the bay of the clio so took a while, especially doing it on my own. Could have done with an extra pair of hands to manipulate the engine out a bit easier but i got by ok on my own.

Engine out!

Defo a good idea tagging the loom, saves a lot of headaches when putting it back in!

whats the reason behind changing the PAS to Manual ?

Keep us updated on the project

Power steering rack is leaking all over the place. I already have a manual rack and column so was going to convert.
Are the power racks easy to service? can the seals be replaced easily?, if so i may just do that but being honest, i know nothing about racks so i dont know how easy they are to work on.

fair enough, when my pas rack seals went i found it easier just to swap it out for a 2nd hand pas rack, bought from infinicar, had brand new track rod ends on it as well

That rack is now in Chet's (the site owner) R19 16V Cabby fitted by me in the pouring rain, oh that was fun...
