Renault 5 GTX 1.7

Renault 5 GTX

so one morning before work i read the local free paper in cars for sales adds, and in one of the ford garage area in spotted the R5 for sale for £400 and said to my self i'll go and have a look at that! so it came lunch time, and popped up the garage, as i entered i saw the usell boring fords, then i spotted the R5, it really did stick out from the rest of the cars there, and to my eyes it looked great!

after a chat with one of the reps, talking at renault 5's and how much fun there are to drive.

so a few weeks later after sorting the insurance and cash and space out the R5 was mine they kindly put a new front tyre on (although it really need to two new tyres ) and new number plates and also a crappy tax disc holder and sticker with ford written all over them

so got home and got that unpleased look from my mum

Then placed the R5 on SORN as it had work it be done..

sadly i did'nt take many pics as i was working on it, but you all know what rust and a cam belt looks like

the poor R5 looked like it has'nt been polished for a while, so a good clean up and polishing it started to look better, over time i must of polished it about 10 times and its really brought the colour back! and i try to polish it twise a month, or when ever i get the time to do so.

also the engine, was really dirty, oil, muck and shite all over the place..so the GUNK came out and spent a few good days cleaning it up, it was brown and black before,
now you can see an engine

new parts i have fitted in no order has been:

new cambelt and AUX belt, air and fuel filter, tyre (it need that changed to idiots!) wiper blades, oil and filter change, new dissy cap and router arm, spark plugs, new
air hose ducting i'm sure there is more,i can't remember right now.

the tailgate paint on the R5 was flaking off and was starting to rust in places, and look really shite.. so that was sanded down, rust killed and repainted.

also the rear wiper motor did'nt work, so the wires where
chased and found a kind and break in one of the wires just where the tail gate opened, so that was sorted with a slicing and a little solder.

the hub caps where flaking badly, and i did'nt really like then anyway, so my dad painted the steel wheels in hammerite smooth black, and i really like that that! also the wheel nuts where cleaned and polished

the rear bumper was losse on the drivers side, so that was removed, and found the problem, a huge hole where the bumper mounting lug once sat, so a new plate was made, and then fitted into the hole using body filter, which now has stopped the wobble and bird sounds

also the fuel breather had lost its mount, so a new plate and mount was made for that, now its sits safe and sound.

the carb..

an awful mess, never had a clean in its life and some parts of the linkage where sticking, also the carb base, and flanges to inlet manifold look the to fix down with household bath room sealant, it was peeling, falling apart and doing no good what so ever, so the carb was remove cleaned up, removed the rubbish sealant from the carb and flanges and all put back using the prober sealant.

i'll finnish this report later, and i get the few pics i have up!

mean while heres what she looks like now:

thats an awful camphone pic btw

cheers,

I had my rear shocks replaced and I can now drive my car without taking a sick bag with me, smoother but not as fun lol

My car had 1 previous owner and I have all the service history and receipts - even for it's yearly antifreeze top up but bizzarely there is no mention of the cambelt, how much are they to get hold of?
