Renault 5 1.7 from Malta - project Lily

Good morning Guys,

This will be a new thread dedicated to the ongoing modifications to my Renault 5 project.

Introduction:
The car started its life as a 1989 Renault 5 campus 5 door 1.1 and was lady - owned and well looked after (apart from the various parking dents). then after 17 years ownership the car was sold to a friend of mine who had plans to modify the car as it was too slow for a youngster. Finding a 1.4 turbo engine in From a Gt Turbo proved to be very difficult, so instead he opted for a 1.7 engine from a Renault Chamade ( the same engine was fitted in Renault 5's in Gtx, Gte & Baccara versions). The gearbox is from a Diesel so that the car has low rations, drive shafts have been uprated, the original carb has been swapped for a Weber 40 single barrel (which used to live in a modified mk1 escort) , the weber has been de- chocked . Splitfire leads and plugs found their way in the engine bay and a custom exhaust was made, with a 4 -1 manifold a straight pipe and a jap style can on the back. Also a set of 15inch alloy wheels with Nankang Rubber have been added to enchance the looks of the car .

This is not my engine but its exactly like mine apart from a different air intake. This pic belongs to David's R5 GTX 1 of only 3 on the island.

One fine day my friend decided that he wanted something more modern like a Glanza so he decided to sell the R5, I was looking for a daily runner at the time, I test drove the car and liked it, a price has been agreed and I made it my own on November 2007.

The first mods:

The first mods were sourced from ebay a set of clear front and side indicators.

Afterwards a Dashmat has been added to the dashboard as it had a few cracks, The gearknob has been replaced with a Pilot item, I had a sparco handbrake cover from my old mk2 Fiesta which has been fitted, A Simoni Racing steering wheel found its way in place of the horribile standard steering wheel and the window winders have been replaced with aluminium Items. A kill switch which also used to be part of my mk2 Fiesta has been used to fill one of the redundant holes in the dashboard.

One fine morning I was bored and after reading an article on Redline I decided that the car had to loose weight so the stripping began and all upholtery, rear seat , soundproofing and so on has been removed. i also considered removing the door cards bur since they are made out of plastic they are very light so they have been retained, also the spare wheel undertray has been removed and the wheel fitted inside the car, the rear wiper and motor have also been ditched.

My latest present to the R5, a Rev- counter with shift light.

Parts sourced before the respray:

Renault 5 GTX sideskirts ( these will have to be slight modified to fit the 5 door shell)

Renault 19 style front grille

A set of red tinted rear lights from ebay ( a bargain at 20 euros)

A rear spoiler from ebay

Dtm style mirrors

Also a set of Auto-style lowering springs are on their way from Holland.

The future:

The car is planned to go in the Bodyshop in the first few months of 2009. My idea is to keep the same colour and to colour code all the plastic parts and fit the parts mentioned above.

suggestions? :

I am still thinking about fitting a Gt Turbo front bumper or keeping the standard bumper :
