Accident repair?

Well you know, you try and get help off other forums which you think might be more suitable but always end up back here. Funny that.

Got meself a few q's. Namely

Anyone know much about airbag systems?
Are there easier ways to roughly check if a chassis is bent other than by putting it in a jig?
Any cheap suppliers of second hand panels and airbags for a lag2 ?:P

Cheers

what about airbag systems?

a tape measure is still the best method

You can get these things, just involves a hell of a lot of ringing around.

Tape measure, distance from hub to hub etc?

Front 2 airbags deployed, obviously i need to find some airbags from somewhere, cheaper the better.

however I'm not too sure about airbag computer. As far as I know its a single use item. however im not sure if i can get a non triggered one from another vehicle and have it reprogrammed?

My local dealer sais no..but im not convinced.

hub to hub isn't the best way as standard tolerences are mounting points within up to a 10mm sphere (lotus elises work to 3mm which are the tightest) and by the time thats at the hub they can be quite far out.

Unless its had a side swipe and not remember the damage to the lag I would say the cabin is still true to cheack diagonals in the boot and the bay, pay attention tot he seam sealer which although little used on the newer ones goves a good idea if somethings moved a lot.

Wishbones etc all bend pretty easily/tear off these days so a lot of damage is avoided, it makes getting them off the trsansporter a bugger though!

Airbags, I told you this before, once it pops if you just plugt in new airbaghs the light will eithe rcome on or they will pop. You can have them reset by companies that do ecu unlocking etc etc

Also I haven't done any new ren accident damage (theres no value in renaults) but the fords etc, just get another airbag ecu, plug in its fine. Most recent car btw was 06 fiesta.

Theres no element to reprogramming, as its a standalone system.

You'll need a new dashtop due to the airbag anyway, also the trim, is it the whiteor brown powder? the brown is really hard to remove if its not been wiped off quick so may need other trim.

Avoid the dealers as their business is to sell stuff, not help you. Occasionally there may be a usefull guy there but often when he is discovered as 'helpful' hes relocated out the back where you can't talk to him!

Thanks for the useful info chris, the front endge of the driver side door seems to have taken most of the impact along with the front wing/wheel. No damage to door pillar, very slight damage to inner wing (small dent)

Major point of worry is 2 small dints behind the back corners of the sun roof

Car also took a direct front impact in to a 3 posted road sign , so im not sure if debris hitting the sunroof would have caused this or if its a sign that the roof is ever so slightly kinked?

if the screens are fine and all the other doors gaps are right around the frame then the roofs fine, the dints could be debris, some arse standing/leaning on the glass etc.

check ths front chassis rails for crunmples, the subframes thankfully normalyl take a lot of the damage.

All gaps around the doors seem to be ok, apart from the back driver side which seems about 1mm, maybe 2 out compared to the other side, although this could just be where the front door pushed it off?

edit: no damage to any of the windows/screens.

check the striker plate to see if its moved, if the door still opens as easy as it always did then I wouldn;t worry.

Theres a lot of very bent cars on the roads (main dealers are good at selling smacked repairedcars up here), so 1/2mm is pretty good!

striker plate, the bit where the latch pin is, if its moved you will see it in the paint, also if the doors are scuffing on it when opened somethings bent.

The sad truth is the 'official' way to adjust doors is a jack and wood under it or get the heaviest fecker to bounce on it when the windows down.
