Exclamation Just rebuilt engine, starter not working???

I've just finished putting everything back together after a mammoth engine project. And just tried to turn the engine over, without spark plugs, to prime the engine with oil.

All that happens is that there its a 'click' sound, the same as when you have a flat battery.
The battery is brand new and fully charged. Everything is wired up how it should be, I think.

I'm sure that it should sound like its turning over but I haven't tried to start an engine without spark plugs so any help please!

By the way its on a 19 16v PH1

I'm being thick!! I tried to turn the alternator, stiff as ya like. Where's the crank bolt?? Would i need to remove the cam cover?
Like I say everythings in, and you know how 19's are, not enough room to swing a small cat round in.

so you have rebuilt an engine from what I can gather and don't know where the crank bolt is?

The bottom one is the crank pulley

LOL, it doesn't have a hole in it normally!

try some extra earths (jump leads) from the battery negative to the shell and the engine block somewhere.

where exactly does the clicking come from?

could try it without the aux belt on to eliminate anything which that powers.

- you're turning it over without spark plugs in?
