gearbox oil level should be til it overflows out the filler point. (car on level ground).

the filler point is on the front face of the gearbox, it's like a plastic wing nut thing that unscrews. might need a length or tubing with a funnel on the end to get down there!

CH has done a good techy article on it: Manual Gearbox Oil Change

don't have that on mine, i believe it's just a breather for the box oil though. if it's what i'm thinking of i've just got a white plastic plug instead!

so fill the box up til it starts pouring out, screw the plug up well, go for a drive, come back to it later and top up if necessary.

Where's it leaking from?

i havnt got it confirmed but i think its going to be the bearing on the driveshaft? apparently they can pop in/out making oil leak out??? the guys looking at it monday apparently!! ive topped it all up now, it took 1ltr before it started overflowing!

definitely needed some then!

at least you can take it back to the guy, that's good. the driveshaft on the passenger side goes right into the gearbox housing and so the end of the shaft is surrounded by the gearbox oil, for lubrication. what keeps it in is a rubber gaitor around the end of the shaft which should seal against the side face of the gearbox.

The gaitor is held against the box face by a metal ring with three screws through it, you can see it clearly. There are a few reasons why it wouldn't seal properly, maybe there's dirt trapped between the mating faces, maybe the screws are not tight enough, maybe the threads were stripped so they won't tighten (happened to me, steel screws into soft aluminium housing... ) or possibly that ring itself was put on backwards!

Good luck getting it sorted

unusual for that seal to leak, but at the small end of the gaitor, there is a bearing/seal so the shaft can spin round in it. That's what the guy is talking about.
