Wheel Bearings?

I went to see a clio today (1.8 16v) and the owner said that it needed two new wheel bearings. Anyway I jacked each of the front wheels up to check for play in them and they had a lot of play if held at 3 and 9 o'clock but none that I could feel at 12 and 6 o'clock.

Having been out in the car it sounds the same as when I had a wheel bearing going on mine from inside the car but a lot louder (presumming it's as theres two going). What do you think?

Could it be the wheel bearing even though there is no play at 12 and 6, or if not what would be the other possibilities?

Thanks.

I think they would be really bad for you to detect play at the wheel. the movement at 3 and 9 could be track rod ends.

If it hums constant with speed then just change the bearings.

track rod ends are cheaper than wheel bearings too

Track rod ends were my first thought, but would they cause the noise you hear from inside the car?

The car comes with two new wheel bearings anyway, just need to be fitted.
