Power Steering Pump

How difficult are these to replace? How long should it take on average? (on a clio 16v btw)

If you were to drive a car with a broken pump, i.e without power steering, how difficult is it to drive? I had thought before it would be the same as any non-power steering model but have read something about different ratios on the steering rack meaning it's rediculously heavy if you just drive with a broken pump.

Thanks

I lost the power steering on my R19 7 miles from home and getting the car around roundabouts was a fight!

I found it a fairly easy job changing out the PAS pump on the 19 but i am guessing its a whole different kettle of fish with the clio due to the smaller engine bay.
See Project UCC for when i changed out my PAS pump.

thanks, so you reckon a longish drive would be a bit of a nightmare without the pas pump?

I had just pressumed that it wouldn't be too bad as a few people have changed to manual steering but forgot that they switch the rack as well.

On the move in a straight line, its fine.
But don't forget it's not only you on the road, what if some kid ran out in front of you as you are driving and because your PAS is not working, you can't steer out of the way quick enough?

OK extreme i know but why take the risk?

I drove the chammy from carlisle to glasgow with no power steering, and then drove everyday for 2 weeks before I had to put the other rack on to get it through the mot.

Its a problem if your a gay boy band member but assuming your actually not a fairy, have 1 arm and so on its fine.

Amber, Emma, Soneji and my mum drove the chammy when it had no power steering and its a damn sight heavier than a clios with no ps

Also FPMSL at neo

as for changing the pump, its a job I woudl only do after pulling the lump out. If you do it in the car easiest way is to remove the inlet manifold.
