New Clutch

Hiya,
My clutch has started to slip big time so I think it's about time to get it changed. Only thing is I've heard it's a 9 hour job and costs about £400 to do. Is this true?

Yeah it is.... if you take it to Renault! I don't know how much Chris charges but I usually say £100-150 plus parts for a clutch change depending on how well I know the person. It's not a hard job at all but I personally like to get the front end up on some ramps and drop the engine rather than struggle with doing it in the bay. Each to their own though.

TBH if you've got a "book of lies" aka a "Haynes Manual" you should be able to do it yourself over a weekend.

Im awaiting my bill, clutch cost me just over £50 and it was in the garage 2 days. I hope they were not working on it all 2 days, they reckoned 9hr job and it took the awhile because of rounded bolts and nuts.

Rounded by who though? TBH, I find it hard to believe that the gearbox retaining bolts were rounded cos they're pretty hefty buggers so either they're making up excuses to try and charge you more or some muppet has been let loose with some spanners.

Mechanic asked me if anyone had been at it before, while ive had it nobody has tried it. Chap who owned it before me was cheif technician on Jaguars at RAF Coltishall so cant quite see him fecking it over. I was quite worried though when the mechanic ran off a list of other problems like the starter only being held in with 1 bolt, wrong pinchbolts on the ball joints, engine mount with nut missing.

Indeed, I dont wish to unearth any more nasty secrets the car might be hiding. I would say im supprised Renault didnt pick-up any of the faults when they had it in after I broke down in there car park, was starting problems yet they never noticed they problem with the starter just broke my window. One of the previous owners was a member of RSC or so it would seem, came with a free window banner on it

often I take boxes off and find chewed clutch cover bolts and the cars on the original clutch.

There is the 6mm allen key bolts and the 1.4's use 11mm bolts, sometimes I have found a mix of both on the same engine. ALso see some that have been chiseled ON, not off.

Well this is a do or sell for the car really. I'm reluctant to sell her, but it's a lot of dough to get it changed. May have to opt for the give it a go yourself

Mine does that too - has done for ages. I can't work out if it's worn plates or something else. Sometimes it won't slip for a month or so and then it's all the time.
