Engine running cold

The temp gauge used to sit around half way but it's luck if it sits around a 1/4 of the way up now. I have noticed that the feedback tube to the expansion tank doesn't seem to be kicking any coolant through. Is it the stat?

Yeah i'd say check the stat is working ok and swap it for a new one.

the return to the header tank is infamous for clogging with shite.

However when the stat opens (or is jammed in the open position) the return won't be putting any coolant into the header tank, if you rev it though some should come out of it even with an open stat.

Alos its a diesel, they don't heat up much, be thankfull you don't have the old VAG lump, you can leave them idling for an hour and the blocks still cool enough to comfortably touch.

my rover/BMW diesel is like that, never, ever, has it gone over half on the temp guage, or dropped below, even when the fan stopped working!

Definatly true even after my matrix change it never gets "too" hot in the cabin
