take the plug cover thingy out (ht leads off it, the 3 10mm bolts and the oil filler cap removed it lifts out). Its also a lot easier if you remove the rocker cover fully

Then suck out what you can or mop it up with paper towel.

Sort out the leak, it can either be loose bolts or a cracked gasket.

When most of it is out you can pull the plugs and let the little bit that remains go into the cylinder, clean up the bit where the plug sits, clean/replace the plugs.

honestly would do no harm to have the rocker cover off and check/replace that gasket. it's just a case of undoing the (many) screws and it lifts off.

i'm not sure how the plastic spark plug cover thingy would stop oil coming in anyhow?

water, suck it out with a straw and dry the plug wells with paper towel. don't undo the spark plugs themselves until it's all dry, i'd get it all as dry as poss then leave it to stand rather than unscrewing the plugs which presumably do not need to come out?

i doubt you'll have got water into the oil system unless you've undone the spark plugs, since they form a seal when they are tight.

Good old phase 1 19's, ive had to do this on numerous occasions. Take all the HT leads out but leave the plugs in, get some paper towel (not too crap tho or it will fall apart when u try to take it out) and stick it down each tube. You might have to do this afew times to get all of it out, then once its all out remove the plugs and give them a dry and a clean along with the leads. Out of interest how much water you got down there? The most ive had is about 2 inches. Hopefully it is just water that has come through the vent and you havent popped a core plug.

Atleast you didnt get it at 3am on a cold Feb morning, must have been the most worrying 12 miles ive ever driven. Fine under 4000rpm, but that was it nothing but trouble after that.

I know what you mean, the dodgy petrol from tesco's only makes the journey even more 'fun' as a passenger i had once said.

don't bother with the spark plug cover, it won't stop water getting into the spark plug well.

It's a very common issue with the ph1 19 16v to get water in the well spesh during or after rain (happens now and again with the ph2 as well )

What you need to do is make yourself a drain cover

similar to that, what it does is deflect the water off over the top of the engine and down the back by the exhaust manifold.
It simply attaches to the strut brace.

Actually its the cheap version of a George Foreman Grille!

engines on the valvers get hot enough to be able to provide enough heat transfer heh

Can't touch the rocker cover on my engine at all if the car has been running 15 minutes or more, it gets that hot!!
