Mixing brake fluid..

Is it okay to mix different DOT ratings? Need to top up my brake fluid and have no idea whats in it... says DOT on the cap but haven't seen DOT 3 anywhere.

yes its fine.

DOT 3 is the min rating has been since the 80's.

Why does it need topped up? Check the pads for wear, cos if you top it up new pads mean its gonna overflow.

It actually doesn't need topping up as it turns out.

The (!) flashes on and off randomly when driving, I presumed the level was low but its not. May just be a loose sensor connection somewhere. The brakes are working fine and when I was doing the coilovers the pads looked like they had loads left on them.
