Clarification please

Would gearbox bearings drone/hum (like wheel bearings) or click/tick/knock if they were on the way out? I've been getting a noise from under the car that's like a knocking noise but you only hear it when coasting - put the right foot down and it goes, which to me suggests engine mount as I'd have thought bearing noise would be there all the time.

Dad's doing his usual thing of painting a "worst case scenario" diagnosis by saying it might be the gearbox bearings that are fooked on account of the noise. But I myself can't see that causing car to lock in gear.

It still seems to be alright though, goes into every gear and reverse although it does feel a bit ropey still.

Car's up on stands now and there's nothing obviously loose that could cause the aforementioned noise so I'm assuming that will disappear along with the gearing issue when this torque reaction bar/stabiliser mount is replaced. The rubber in it is proper shagged by the way, you can slide it up and down the shank bolt on the engine side with your fingers and I'm guessing you shouldn't be able to do that!

Don't think it's that, it engages/disengages fine.

Thuds a bit thought in first, hard to get it to bite smoothly but I'd condemn the gearbox over the clutch myself.

box bearings are spinning quickly so it tends to be a whine, or a chattering, not a clicking as such normally

could be a mounting gone which is putting strain on a driveshaft.
