valver fuel pump

my valvers got an intermittent fuel pump problem. Last time it happened i checked all the wiring and it all seemed to be fine. It looked like the wiring had got hot at some point so i decided the pump must be on the way out.

Anyway that was about 3 months ago, I bought some breakdown cover and went off to uni!

Yesterday i got to the top of a hill and the car just died on me and wouldnt start. it ws trying to fire but it was obvious that there was no fuel.

Now im thinking i should just change the fuel pump before its too late. Its a mk1 clio 16v.
There is that 'hole' under the rear seats but im not sure how hard its going to be to do if i cant get the car in the air. I can remove the pipes and wires from the top of the housing but im im not even sure if it will come out of the 'hole' and whether i'd be able to get it back in...

any advice?

it will come out the hole assuming its the later style on.

The pumps commutator ring will be worn through in places, when it stiops there it won;t start up, a bang tends to get it goign though

Well its a late 1991 car so i dont know whether its a later style one or not, I bloody hope it is.

yeah, a bang got it going. I just look like a proper pikey when my passengers have to lift the seat up and punch the fuel tank to get it going.

would a picture help identify it?

Looking at it i dont think its going to come out. Whats the point of them having a hole there if they dont make it big enough for the pump to come out!
French engineering for you!

I imagine having the tank out isnt the sort of job i can do outside my house, in the road using the wheel changing jack! I'll be home in a month and then i'll be able to the get it up on a 2 poster ramp.

The problem that youre suggesting is wrong with the pump... is it the sort of thing that will cause it to just die?
I mean it hasnt given any problems for about 3 months and then did it yesterday and now its fine again, its only got to last about another 500 miles!

the hole is there for the fuel level sender, They later moved the pump to the same unit. The cars were all carbed when designed, thats why theres not a big hatch to get them out on the early cars.

I habve done it on a 19 on the road with the standard jack on 1 side and the spare wheel under the other rear wheel, that was fun.

yes, it will not work until its banged, banging it makes the pumps shaft rotate slightly and it will spin up and stay turning until it stops on the worn part.

just hit the tank with a bit of wood.

Snooker cues are good weapons... I mean devices to carry in a car for such incidents
