Can I just do it from cold as I read somewhere that the engine should be up to temp?

Couldn't find anywhere in Edinburgh that sold a compression test kit, or anywhere with one in stock that wasn't about £90 I should say, as all halfords etc were out of stock of cheap ones. Anyway, I then bought one off ebay about 12 o'clock yesterday and so I was well pleased when it arrived first thing today, but some arsebandit has cracked the glass on the front of the gauge, so now I need to see whats what about getting a replacement one - though no doubt they will claim that it was done when posted and refuse to exchange. So for that reason there hasn't really been much progress tbh. Going away up north on holiday for a couple of weeks on thursday so probably won't get anything done before I go.

Been away for the past two weeks so haven't been able to update this. Before I left I did the compression test and all is fine, all 4 cylinders came through about the same +- 0.25 bar iirc. Drained and re-filled the coolant in the half hour I had to spare before going to work. Working full time at the moment so not so much time to work on the car due to stupid hours.

My only theory for the moment is that the starter may have jammed and every time I turned the key the injector was spraying into the cylinder and as I tried starting it so much there was too much being put in which caused a hydraulic lock. I don't know for sure if thats possible but it's all I can think of that could cause what happened.

Oil will be changed wed hopefully and it will be taken for a decent drive.

lol. Btw what oil would you recommend? I know to avoid the magnatec stuff as it doesn't go well with the F7P engine but are there any others to avoid or any particularly good ones?

I use comma lite 10W40, always keeps the tappets quiet and stays clean for a while as well.

Oil was changed tonight. Tbh it wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be as I thought the oil filter would be more of a bitch that it turned out to be.

It's also now clear without a doubt that it's petrol in the oil, you should have smelt the oil - if you were sniffing it blindfold you would think it was purely petrol.

After re-filling with new oil and having charged the battery I tried starting her up, but it wouldn't start. However I think it's just out of petrol as I knew it was very close to being out of petrol. Thought I would go get some from the petrol station but the only jerry can I could find was full of petrol but has been there for about 10 years so in the end I just left it and will put more in tomorrow.

Put in some petrol tonight from the old jerry can I had (not too much tbh - probably about 1.5 litres) and she's still not firing. It's dark so I can't pursue other avenues just now but I'll try and do so in the morning before I go off to work.

It's turning over fine but just doesn't fire. So do I just need to check for spark and fuel getting in? If so how's the best way to check these?

Tbh it's similar to when you turn over and the imobiliser stops it firing, but the imobiliser light isn't flashing or anything.

pull the coil lead off and stick a plug in it and rest it on the cam cover.

Sparking fine, however no fuel is getting into the cylinders. I had all four plugs out, turned it over and couldn't smell any petrol.

What can cause no petrol to get in? When the ignition is turned on you can hear the fuel pump priming so am I right in thinking it will be a faulty sensor or something to do with the ECU?

thats just what popped into my head a minute ago, could the fuel filter be causing it if it's needing replaced?

normal speed with the plugs in, faster than normal with them out. It basically seems to be cranking as normal.
