Yes another car!

I don't even know what reg it is!

A forum member called valver (Sean) had a ph1 16V and he took the engine and box out of it and its stayed like that for about a year or so I believe.

he offered me the car some time ago I said no, he got rid of the exhaust and I took the drivers side headlight for Docs ph1.

That was a few months back. I then asked him if he still had it as I wanted some parts. He replied with £50 and the whole cars mine, he needs rid as it was sitting in his brothers garage.

How could I say no to that! Worst case scenario was I would have to bin the shell and take the parts I needed.

I remember the shell was in good condition, its better than the other blue hatch I have.

So whilst we had the van today, my sister, Amber ands myself went over to get on with the job, well Amber and I did, my sister just sat in the van and read a book.

Amber took all the photos.

First thing was to get the car rolling. The engine and box was on the subframe which had been removed from the car. I thought, I'll just bang that back in. Then I decided I'll just take the engine off the subframe and put the frame on the car first then worry about the engine later as it was much easier to do that way.

Engine waiting to be removed from the subframe

Well Amber and I went back today and got cracking again.

First job was to sort out the rear interior. The interior had been taken out as had the fuel level sender.

So first job was to put the level sender back in, its the wrong one, a gauge one not a digi one so its reading 3 gallons on an empty tank.

So put that all back together and the rear seats in.

[img:567:378:c72cbbaa3c]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/project%20B%20day%202%2001.jpg[/img:c72cbbaa3c]

holding the boot up, theres no boot lifter on the nearside and its hinge pin has also broken.

[img:567:378:c72cbbaa3c]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/project%20B%20day%202%2003.jpg[/img:c72cbbaa3c]

Engine back in.

Bonnet on as well

Cars now thankfully back at the base.

I have to go back and collect the front bumper and gearbox.

I have to say towing with women is not recommended, I don't care if I offend the females, you just cannae do it, accept it.

Anyway

[img:378:567:76573b654c]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/project%20B%20home%2001.jpg[/img:76573b654c]

[img:567:378:76573b654c]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/project%20B%20home%2002.jpg[/img:76573b654c]

[img:567:378:76573b654c]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/project%20B%20home%2003.jpg[/img:76573b654c]

[img:378:567:76573b654c]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/project%20B%20home%2004.jpg[/img:76573b654c]

there was a slight boo - boo

[img:567:378:76573b654c]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/project%20B%20home%2005.jpg[/img:76573b654c]

Shopping list of parts/stuff to do, so far

hazard switch - should have one
boot hinge pins - got them just need to fit
tailgate lifting strut
number plates - got a rear one made up today for FREE
exhaust system - Neal's coming through for me on this one, top man
downpipe and lambda - got one
repair the dash to engine bay loom
get passenger door central locking working and replace door pins
horns
front splitter
drivers headlight
Inlet manifold and gasket - got the manifold half polished
throttle body - got one
drivers side wishbone, there is a clio 16V wishbone fitted which is shorter than a 1.4 19 wishbone!
front towing eye - this was a nightmare to tow without.

And other stuff.

Tomorrow I hope to get cracking on it.

The brakes have cleaned up lovely on their trip, even without the servo eventually I could easily stop both cars with them.

Well i got what I hoped for, I got cracking on it.

First job was to inflate and fit the other 2 gold ph1's.

This allowed me a good look at the rear discs, like i said they cleaned up well.

offside rear disc

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20osr%20brakes%20after%20tow.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

the nearside

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20nsr%20brakes%20after%20tow.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

Pics of the wheels later.

I then set about sorting the plip key, a bit of cleaning and fresh batteries and the plip works.

Then I removed the broken bumper bolts from the inner wings and subframe.

Fuses were sorted out, right rating ones fitted.

Then I set about the broken tailgate hinge. I removed the hinge pivot from the car, which was interesting as I had to hold the tail gate whilst at the same time remove the pivot from the car

Here it is off and 1 of the broken parts removed

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20boot%20hinge%2001.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

other one as well

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20boot%20hinge%2002.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

nice new pin

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20boot%20hinge%2003.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

Then it was tiem to remove the tailgate so I could work on the broken part stuck in it.

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20boot%20hinge%2004.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

I eventually got it out

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20boot%20hinge%2005.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

It was then a case of just fitting the pivot back on then refitting the tailgate

Then it was onto the dash to engine bay loom, this had been repaired before but wasn't sealed up properly

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20dodgy%20wiring%2001.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

the brown wire is the new section I added, done the same for all of them

[img:378:567:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20dodgy%20wiring%2002.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

then sealed it up, note front dics cleaned up well too

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20dodgy%20wiring%2003.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

The steering column was about 2 inches to high, you could see the white nylon bush on the column at the pedals, so I belted it back down into line.

I bought a new front number plate.

I also bought 2 stop light bulbs and an arb bush.

ARB bush wasn't needed as the bush was still on the bar but the clamp wasn't that was all, so just fitted the clamp. The old bush was fine.

The boot lock was secured to the tailgate, the metal clip was missing so I fitted another metal clip to it, problem solved.

Whilst sorting the plip I noted the roof console wasn't fitted right

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20roof%20console%2001.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

sorted

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20roof%20console%2002.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

I found the cover for the receiver and fitted that as well.

Done a few other jobs that I can't recall.

I then hoovered it and then gave it a quick wash, note all 4 gold wheels

[img:378:567:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20washed%2001.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

in this pic you can see how wonky the drivers wheel is, when the 19 wishbone is stuck on it will be sorted

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20washed%2002.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

[img:567:378:5679a6e06f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20washed%2003.jpg[/img:5679a6e06f]

Hoping to go and collect the bumper and gearbox tomorrow night.

[img:567:378:2e9ca1d51b]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/project%20B%20alarm.jpg[/img:2e9ca1d51b]

Enough of the nosing around and whip out the engine. I started to knock out the roll pin, btw I neve cut the gaiter! It started to move then disaster, punch broke off inside, not moving now.

[img:567:378:2e9ca1d51b]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/project%20B%20os%20inner%20cv%2001.jpg[/img:2e9ca1d51b]

Need to repair the engine bay loom, done most of it now actually, will get pics tomorrow

Badge is fitted no pics. But the back ends smarter now thanks to it.

Anyway time to fix the loom, fit the box and stick it all back in.

the new box to go on

anyway, cleaned the box up and the rust off the splines and greased it where applicable.

Box back on and the engine was cleaned as well. Also as it was an early lump, it has the drain plug on the water gallery so it was blasted clear, took about 15 mins of continual flushing to clear it.

Magic.

No pics of the loom repaired but some of it fitted back to the engine

at the alternator

The other day my exhaust system and the inlet manifold gasket arrived from Neal, no pics as the camera was in Berlin with my mum. But it was fitted, except the exhaust as theres no cat.

Today I bought, new balljoint, aux belt, box oil, horn and exhaust rubbers.

First easy job was to fit the new horn. They use twin horns and both were dead. So a new horn at under seven pounds was a bargain.

Its also incredibly loud.

[img:567:378:e69f3ed24a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20horn%2001.jpg[/img:e69f3ed24a]

original ren items

[img:567:378:e69f3ed24a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20horn%2002.jpg[/img:e69f3ed24a]

new horn fitted

[img:567:378:e69f3ed24a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20horn%2003.jpg[/img:e69f3ed24a]

I also took the remains of the cut 5th injector pipe off, then hammered the pipe end closed, put it on no leaks, good enough. Time to fire the beast up, its had its engine out for about a year, its not been run in who knows how long etc.

After a few cranks it fired up, revved lovely ran then died, the little remains of fuel had all gone. So had to get more fuel.

It was a tad loud as expected with no exhaust, but it was music to my ears and vibration to the neighbours windows! lol

So after we got some fuel I tried it again, note 3 gallons is a lie as the wrong sender is in the tank, thats why the fuel light flickers. A few stumbles on the 1st vid, but it shows how loud it was attempting to fire.

right click save as

2.5meg

http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20firing%20up%2001.MOV

this one shows it running, no aux belt fitted thats why the battery light is on

http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20firing%20up%2002.MOV

need the cat, new screen, headlight and it will be put in for its mot then its up for grabs.

The rear offside light had faded, its now orange instead of red. So I attempted to sort it.

The whole red section has faded, this pic is of the fog light part

[img:567:378:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20rear%20os%20light%2001.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

I reasoned that clear acrylic paint I had from making models years ago (Tamiya x27) should do the job.

So I dribbled some in and wiggled it around to spread the paint around in the light, this is the rear light/brake light part, a lot better eh!

[img:567:378:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20rear%20os%20light%2002.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

you can see it on the outside

[img:567:378:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20rear%20os%20light%2003.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

the paint.

[img:567:378:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20rear%20os%20light%2004.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

needs some more added but its a lot better than it was.

Like I said earlier I fitted another hub and strut to the front offside so the wheel sat properly, the reason it sat wrongly was it had a cracked top mount and a clio 52mm hub with the wheel bearing half hanging out!

This is how it sits now and as it should be.

[img:378:567:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20hub%20and%20strut%20os.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

Only problem is the hub has 2 broken bolts in it, not to worry, I had another hub and flange, only thing it needed was a bearing so got a bearing and pressed it in.

[img:567:378:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20hub%20and%20bearing%20offside.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

Just need to fit it, which I will do when I sort out a drive shaft.

I took some pictures of the clio hub. This frankly is beyond belief, the brack carrier was spaced with washers and it still rubbed the disc and the hub flange rubbed on the carrier! A total disgrace.

[img:378:567:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/clio%2052mm%20hub%20bearing%2001.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

yep thats the bearing sticking out about 4mm, its meant to be 3mm below the edge!

[img:567:378:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/clio%2052mm%20hub%20bearing%2002.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

[img:567:378:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/clio%2052mm%20hub%20bearing%2003.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

oh yeah 52mm hubs don't fit on a 54mm strut, so the holes have been drilled out on both the hub and the strut! Just as well I changed them both eh!

[img:378:567:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/clio%2052mm%20hub%20bearing%2004.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

Drivers side top mount on the new strut, perfect, I forgot to get a pic of the cracked old one, it was the worst I have seen

[img:378:567:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20os%20top%20mount%20new.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

this is the cracked passenger top mount, not a problem now as I changed the strut.

[img:378:567:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20cracked%20ns%20top%20mount.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

When fitting the passenger side replacement strut, I put in another shaft and hub as the one on it was knackered, I also freed off the siezed brake sliders and they are greased and work perfectly now. Thats the passenger side all sorted, no pics though.

I then put the heatshields on. This is the lower one

[img:567:378:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20heatshield%2001.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

top and lower sheilds fitted

[img:567:378:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20heatshield%2002.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

getting there, ignore the state of the inlet manifold, its an unfinished polishing and smoothing job!

[img:567:378:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20heatshield%2003.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

This si the drivers side seat, someone has put the radiator or something on it and its leaked on it, Amber had a go at shifting the stains with little success, will either swap it it out or get it clean

[img:378:567:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20drivers%20seat%20stains.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

The car with the new standard struts means its higher than it was. I can now get my jack under it, instead of 1 jack to lift it so my big one can get under.

[img:567:378:e27f592101]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20outside%2019%20-%2009%2001.jpg[/img:e27f592101]

Really hoping to get the car up for sale next week.

Need to get an offside inner CV gaiter for the thing to get it moving.

I also have a reconned shaft which had a dodgy inner CV as the pic shows, I have now repaired it and it has a full compliment of rollers

[img:567:378:e8f23b394f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20os%20ds%20inner%20cv.jpg[/img:e8f23b394f]

Fitted the aux belt which involved bolting the ps pump and refitting all the brackets etc, this is a pic with the engine running

[img:378:567:e8f23b394f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20aux%20belt%20fitted.jpg[/img:e8f23b394f]

heres a vid of it running with the aux belt on, its still tappy but its sat for a long time, it will clear when its run long enough

right click save as 4.1 meg

http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20running%20aux%20belt%20on.MOV

I said yesterday the offside top mount was bad, heres a pic

[img:378:567:e8f23b394f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20offside%20top%20mount%20cracked.jpg[/img:e8f23b394f]

this is the old nearside strut, the one I took off, broken bump stop

[img:567:378:e8f23b394f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20nearside%20strut.jpg[/img:e8f23b394f]

cleaned the strut bearing up and regreased it, need it for the offside strut thats on it now

[img:567:378:e8f23b394f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20ns%20strut%20bearing.jpg[/img:e8f23b394f]

changed the fuel sender for the correct ph1 item, its the one on the left, it no longer reads 3 gallons, but instead the right reading which is nothing tbh

[img:567:378:e8f23b394f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20fuel%20senders.jpg[/img:e8f23b394f]

you can just see the small amount of fuel in the tank

[img:378:567:e8f23b394f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20tank%20sender%20hole.jpg[/img:e8f23b394f]

There was no rad surround with the car apart from a broken section, which is here over the top of a 1.4 carbed rad surround

[img:567:378:e8f23b394f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20rad%20surround%2001.jpg[/img:e8f23b394f]

better pic

[img:567:378:e8f23b394f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20rad%20surround%2002.jpg[/img:e8f23b394f]

I have cut the 1.4 shield to the right size and shape as the 16V one so I can fit that.

Just need my bits to arrive and we can get it mot'd soon.

first job today was to change the bearing and fit a dust gaiter to the offside front strut.

The bearing in it was very, very stiff, I had the other which I regreased the other day to go in.

old bearing

[img:378:567:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20os%20strut%20new%20bearing%2001.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

no gaiter on it

[img:378:567:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20os%20strut%20new%20bearing%2002.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

new bearing

[img:567:378:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20os%20strut%20new%20bearing%2003.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

back together and a gaiter.

[img:378:567:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20os%20strut%20new%20bearing%2004.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

steering is much lighter especially with the engine off.

the hole I put in the old box yesterday

[img:567:378:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20old%20box%20hole.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

new inner CV gaiter for the offside

[img:567:378:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20inner%20cv%20gaiter%2001.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

[img:567:378:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20inner%20cv%20gaiter%2002.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

greased up the CV

[img:567:378:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20inner%20cv%20gaiter%2003.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

ta-da!

[img:567:378:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20inner%20cv%20gaiter%2004.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

shaft fitted and new balljoint fitted

[img:567:378:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20balljoint.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

new track rod end

[img:567:378:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20os%20track%20rod%20end%2001.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

[img:567:378:e0170fd0d0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20new%20os%20track%20rod%20end%2002.jpg[/img:e0170fd0d0]

So the beast now moves under its own power.

I also fitted the hub with the new wheel bearing in it on.

Hopefully tomorrow the headlight will come and I will have to wait until next week for the CAT and the exh clamp and 5th injector pipe.

Need to try and find a decent windscreen.

hope to get some major progress done tomorrow. Just hope the weather holds up.

The radiator fan didn't work, there was a power feed but no earth to it.

I knew this would be a wiring issue, backed up by the fact there was no continuity from the fan power plug to the relay.

I als knew where it would be broken.

So I popped the harness out of the split cover and this is what I saw, no big surprise, note the left half of it, the bulging of the wire, green powder was all there was left.

[img:567:378:0b2fc35fd8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20fan%20wire%2001.jpg[/img:0b2fc35fd8]

I then cut the wire back to good wire, only had a yellow wire handy so fitted that in

[img:567:378:0b2fc35fd8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20fan%20wire%2002.jpg[/img:0b2fc35fd8]

other side

[img:378:567:0b2fc35fd8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20fan%20wire%2003.jpg[/img:0b2fc35fd8]

popped the wiring back in ans the fan works as expected.

Just as I was rounding this job off the postie dropped off a parcel and another just arrived to drop off my tyres as well.

I expected the box to be my headlight, instead it was from Neal. It contained a 5th injetcor pipe, a CAT and a mid to back box clamp.

Once again massive thanks to Neal for getting these parts to me, top man.

So that lot was fitted in quick time, no pics but the engines quiet and the 5th injector pipe is there instead of my hammered closed effort.

I also got the passenger side door lock working off the key, popped the small dent out and got its central locking working.

Some previous owner had decided this looked good, must have been reading max power or something

[img:567:378:0b2fc35fd8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%2016V%20ash%2001.jpg[/img:0b2fc35fd8]

thankfully just 2 sticky pads held it on so it came off easily

[img:567:378:0b2fc35fd8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%2016V%20ash%2002.jpg[/img:0b2fc35fd8]

So just the headlight and screen now.

A pic of the guts of the CAT after I smashed em out

[img:378:567:78b8451093]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20cats%20guts.jpg[/img:78b8451093]

I also bolted the front bumper up properly.

I fixed the rear parcel shelf, this has Kenwood 6x9's fitted poorly to it. The speakers were fitted under the shelf and the grille on top

fitted to the underside of the shelf

[img:378:567:78b8451093]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20rear%20shelf%2001.jpg[/img:78b8451093]

you can see the cut shelf above the cone

[img:378:567:78b8451093]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20rear%20shelf%2002.jpg[/img:78b8451093]

So i fitted them properly, the speaker on the top of the shelf, its now solid, before it would have sounded crap and rattled about. Not tested them out yet as no head unit to hand at the time, but heres pics of them fitted right

[img:378:567:78b8451093]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20rear%20shelf%2003.jpg[/img:78b8451093]

washers to spread the load

[img:378:567:78b8451093]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20rear%20shelf%2004.jpg[/img:78b8451093]

The windscreen was due to be changed this afternoon but the man re-schueduled to tomorrow morning. I was going to do this myself but I can't get a decent used screen anywhere. So £85 fitted for a new screen seems fair enough.

I removed the 2 parts of the seal and cleaned them up, also cleaned the screen surround. The car is rock solid on the screen surround no rust, one of the best I have seen in fact.

[img:567:378:1d66376fba]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/project%20B/B%20sunvisors.jpg[/img:1d66376fba]

Only thing I need is the headlight!
