During April forum member donsrno1 informed me that the person he bought his clio 16V from had a brother who had a clio 1.2 he wanted rid of.

It was a 1994 L plate ph1 5 door.

The car had sat for over a year. Sounds like a plan to me. The price was right as it was free for me to collect, to thank donsrno1 for letting me know about the car I gave him a 16V gearbox.

Amber and I headed through to Edinburgh and went to see the beast. It had clearly sat for a long time. There was no water in the cooling system and there was mould and moss on the tyres due to them sitting for so long.

Anyway the car started with a jump start, the rear drums were siezed on, I showed the on lookers how you free them off.

It was during this time I got a free if rather minging and smelly shower, the car had a suroof and the lip around the roof had built up a large amount of water. Of course to free the rear drums off I had to move the car back and forth with some gusto. The drivers side freed up no problem, the passenger side took a bit more effort.

I was soaked much to their amusement.

Anyway it rolled and we were off! Tesco for petrol first. I was getting wet every bump, corner or stop the car made., also the water had poured down the screen behind the dash, thats when the indicators played up! lol

Anyway the car was pretty nippy for a 1.2, i was surprised. It hit over 90mph but vibrated like a washing machine with bricks in it. Also the brakes were awful.

With the car back in sunny Glasgow we had a look round it and took some photo's

note the big dent in the bonnet, I managed to push 90% of it out.

I took this car for my mother to use as I was intending to turbocharge the red 19. She was quite happy with the car, as it was better than her last small car, the 5!

I checked the car over, I knew it needed a service but wanted to have a good look around the car first.

The car had sat for a year so it wouldn't have got any worse than when the last owner used it, turns out when he had it it needed a damn good service.

The previous owner had been quoted over £500 to get the car through an MOT! Thats why it was taken off the road.

I took the airbox top off to reveal the filter, it was as bad as I was expecting

[img:567:378:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20air%20filter%2001.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

well the filter was doing its job!

[img:567:378:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20air%20filter%2002.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

the clean inside of the filter

[img:567:378:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20air%20filter%2003.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

The throttle body was also as I expected contaminated with oil residue

[img:567:378:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20tb%2001.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

I gave it a quick squirt of carb cleaner, I was going to do it properly at a later date

[img:567:378:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20tb%2002.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

Whilst looking around the engine I noted a lot of clips missing and pipework not clipped where it should be.

A look at the inlet manifold revealed this

[img:378:567:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20engine%20change%20evidence.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

I had assumed at the time that the car had obviously had another engine, now that I think about it, its posible it only got a new head, probably after either a bad overheating incident or the cambelt snapped. The engine was a 1.2 new bottom end or not so that didn't matter.

I removed the front offside wheel to check the brakes and free them off. The disc was clearing up nicely and after a few drives the whole disc was clean.

[img:567:378:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20osf%20brake%2001.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

I took the disc off etc and freed the caliper piston and the sliders, this resulted in a mush softer pedal but the car braked better as expected.

I noted the oil leak here as well, the engine was generally oily due to a leaking rocker cover gasket, that would be sorted at a later date.

[img:567:378:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20osf%20liner%20oil%20leak.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

I removed the offside rear drum, hard to spot in the pictures but someone had removed the self adjusting mechanisms key parts! A major reason the pedal travel was so poor. I had to get that sorted.

[img:567:378:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20osr%20brake%2001.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

It was pretty clean at the back underneath.

[img:567:378:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20osr%20damper.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

Bodywise the car needed both rear arches seen to, there was a few spots on the bonnet and the front passenger wing. The car was also covered in dings from car park incidents. There was even a few with other cars paint colours on them!

This was the rear drivers arch, better than most tbh!

[img:378:567:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20osr%20arch%2001.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

at the top of the arch

[img:567:378:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20osr%20arch%2002.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

and towards the back of the arch

[img:567:378:e5b1eb3430]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20osr%20arch%2003.jpg[/img:e5b1eb3430]

The plans were now to upgrade the front brakes to girlings, sort the rear brake adjuster, a good service, a thorough clean, rediuce the body roll and fit a new passenger front indicator as the lense was broken.

All easy stuff.

The interior was first to get a thorough cleaning out.

I found a load of loose change which is nice.

Also found a Hearts V Rangers ticket for 8th sep 2001! Ticket was £19, block G row 12 seat 28.

hearts were playing from home that day.

Pictures of the interior after its clean, note handbrake!

[img:567:378:3634ad18b8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20int%20clean%2001.jpg[/img:3634ad18b8]

[img:378:567:3634ad18b8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20int%20clean%2002.jpg[/img:3634ad18b8]

There was a spare wheel in the boot, it was brand new and had never been used, this was fitted and the other wheel was put in the cage, after I eventually got the cage free, it was rusted solid!

[img:567:378:3634ad18b8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20new%20spare%20tyre.jpg[/img:3634ad18b8]

Then it was out with the suds, the outside got its first wash in who knows exactly, over a year anyway!

[img:567:378:3634ad18b8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20washed%2001.jpg[/img:3634ad18b8]

[img:567:378:3634ad18b8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20washed%2003.jpg[/img:3634ad18b8]

[img:378:567:3634ad18b8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20washed%2004.jpg[/img:3634ad18b8]

I sorted the rear washer as it wasnt working, but I soon had it mounted rigt and squirting on the screen, magic.

I then took the front nearside wheel off to sort out the front brake brakes. This caliper was worse than the offside caliper, I eventually freed it off and got it working right. As the picture shows 1 pad was almost totally worn away, I just used a nearly new pad from the red 19 on it, problem solved.

[img:567:378:3634ad18b8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20nsf%20inner%20pad.jpg[/img:3634ad18b8]

I then set about sorting out the sunroof, the handle had come away, I then saw in scrappies that this is a very common ailment on these sunroofs! Luckily the handle was in the glovebox of the car when we got it.

I had to overcome the death grip that a stripped screw had on its threads, I won eventually. This is where the handle mounts

[img:567:378:3634ad18b8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20sunroof%2001.jpg[/img:3634ad18b8]

this is where that goes onto in the roof

[img:567:378:3634ad18b8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20sunroof%2002.jpg[/img:3634ad18b8]

you have to unscrew these parts from the bit I took off, yes one of them has broken.

[img:567:378:3634ad18b8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20sunroof%2003.jpg[/img:3634ad18b8]

Then I put it all back together and it worked a treat, as its meant to be, the sunroof is open in this pic

[img:567:378:3634ad18b8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20sunroof%2004.jpg[/img:3634ad18b8]

The offside rear drum was then sorted out. I just took the drum and shoes etc from the red car and put them straight onto the clio

This is the red car, note leaky wheel cylinder

[img:567:378:7d917ecada]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20rear%20brake%20change%2001.jpg[/img:7d917ecada]

[img:567:378:7d917ecada]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20rear%20brake%20change%2002.jpg[/img:7d917ecada]

the shoes to go on the clio

[img:567:378:7d917ecada]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20rear%20brake%20change%2003.jpg[/img:7d917ecada]

This sorted out the drivers side. The passenger side needed cleaned up and a wheel cylinder and solid brake pipe. I also cable tied the dangling handbrake cable to the torsion bar as its meant to be.

6th May, a few days after collecting the car.

I took the car for its mot where it passed, then we went and bought the service stuff, back to front? yes it was!

Service bits, top in clockwise order, air filter, oil filter, dogbone, rear wheel cylinder, wiper blades, cambelt and spark plugs.

[img:567:378:379bff9f33]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20service%20bits.jpg[/img:379bff9f33]

I forgot to get the cam cover gasket, like many other clios the cam cover gasket was never fitted right and as a result has been blown out and its been leaking oil - forever. So it needs a really good clean, the engine that is.

All I done today was drop in the new air filter, what a difference that alone has made, its a lot quicker, look at this compared to the old filter further up!

[img:567:378:379bff9f33]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20new%20air%20filter%20fitted.jpg[/img:379bff9f33]

I also unblcoked the top return hose to the header tank.

I semi fixed the rear parcel shefl, the clio shelves are awful. I punched holes in it and used cable ties to secure it back onto the strengthening bar.

Just need to fit the rest of the service items then the car will be in fine fettle. Also fit new rear dampers.

The emmisions from the MOT test, bear in mind this was before the air filter was changed and the plugs were soaked in oil

fast idle test

CO 0.199 - max limit is 0.200 - lol
HC 41ppm max limit is 200ppm - no bother
lambda 1.018 min limit - 0.970 max limit 1.030

Natural idle test

CO 0.015 max limit 0.300 - easy!

should be a lot better now the filters changed, even better with new oil and plugs.

Early start on it today. First job was the dog bone

heres the old and new, the old one was very soft

[img:567:378:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20dog%20bone%20fitting%2001.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

where it goes

[img:378:567:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20dog%20bone%20fitting%2002.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

new one fitted

[img:378:567:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20dog%20bone%20fitting%2003.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

Made a definate difference.

Next job was the cam cover gasket. It was missing bits and had been pissing oil out for who knows how long.

Airbox off and you can see some of the oil

[img:378:567:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20cam%20cover%2001.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

the plugs are submerged in oil btw

[img:567:378:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20cam%20cover%2002.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

the top of the box, soaked in oil from the cam cover

[img:378:567:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20cam%20cover%2003.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

cover off, nothing was touched, look at how the gasket is sitting

[img:378:567:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20cam%20cover%2004.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

[img:567:378:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20cam%20cover%2005.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

whats that? yes 2 gaskets were on there!

[img:567:378:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20cam%20cover%2006.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

new metal style gasket fitted

[img:378:567:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20cam%20cover%2007.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

Now the engine is hopefully oil tight I can get it blasted down then change the plugs etc.

I also cleaned up the engine number since the airbox was off and it is indeed a 1.2 engine in there, E7F beast!

[img:378:567:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%201.2%20proof%2001.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

after chopping a section out of a spare dash loom I remade the radio loom and fitted the radio out of the red car

[img:567:378:78ec6ce879]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20radio%20fitted.jpg[/img:78ec6ce879]

12th May

Cam cover gasket has stopped the oil leak.

I cleaned the HT leads so the renault writing is clear on them this not only looks better it prevents miss fires!

I changed the spark plugs. I took a pic of the old and new, but for some reason the camera says it doesn't recognise the file type! How the hell that works I have no idea!

The old plugs had clearly not been changed in a very long time, they were reluctant to come out and when they did the gap was large and the electrodes had pitted and were rounded.

new NGK's were fitted and copper grease applied to the threads. Starts a bit quicker, seems a tad smoother, hopefully the fuel bill will show benefits.

I cleaned the inside of the windows etc so thats all crystal clear.

In the boot I refitted the wiper motor trim panel and I also had a look at the heated rear window connectors.

They seemed a bit corroded, so I unplugged them and this is what I saw

[img:567:378:40953b6dc8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20HRW%20connectors.jpg[/img:40953b6dc8]

I wire brushed them back to clean and hopefully thats sorted that, can't test the glass as its to hot and dry! There is 12 V at the screen so it should be fine.

I then set about the oil change. The oil was very black and was well past it, again who knows when this and the filter were last changed

[img:378:567:40953b6dc8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20oil%20change%2001.jpg[/img:40953b6dc8]

this is the old filter, I had to really belt the thing off

[img:378:567:40953b6dc8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20oil%20change%2002.jpg[/img:40953b6dc8]

the new oil filter with the obligitory CHR, mileage and date on it

[img:378:567:40953b6dc8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20oil%20change%2003.jpg[/img:40953b6dc8]

So all that remains is the coolant flush, cambelt, rear wheel cylinder, brake pipe and a touch up of the rear arches.

The car was then going though. My mum didn't like it as its not fast enough, theres no toys and in her words its "a cheap nasty piece of shite compared to the 19".

I tackled the boot lock. It wouldn't lock, the key wouldn't turn it at all.

I knew what the problem was, the tumblers were stuck fully shoved up thus the lock couldn't turn.

This was a combination of the cars long lay up and damaged flappy thingy on the key hole I reckoned.

wd-40 and rost off ice never helped so I pulled the thing out

[img:567:378:9ce535c439]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20boot%20lock%2001.jpg[/img:9ce535c439]

got the front off and cleaned it out

[img:567:378:9ce535c439]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20boot%20lock%2002.jpg[/img:9ce535c439]

[img:567:378:9ce535c439]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20clio%20boot%20lock%2003.jpg[/img:9ce535c439]

basically after some heat, oil and banging it the tumblers are now free so the boot lock works.

Which is nice.

However i nearly lost an eye as a bit came off when I used the blowtorch on it, always wear eye protection folks!

25th May

Today I replaced the rear dampers.

I knew they were well past their best.

I replaced them with used but good 1.4 rt dampers.

An rt damper fitted

[img:567:378:565c4ac78b]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20rear%20shock%2001.jpg[/img:565c4ac78b]

an old 1.2 damper, the good one no less

[img:567:378:565c4ac78b]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/grey%20rear%20shock%2002.jpg[/img:565c4ac78b]

Drivers side old one wasn't to bad. The passenger side was doing nothing at all.

With the new dampers pushing the back down it now returned once instead of wallowing about. To drive its a lot lot better, far more stable.

The car just felt a lot safer especially on long sweeping bends.

8th June

Over the last few weeks the exhaust was blowing badly, so we got a backbox, tried to undo it and the midsection ripped.

So had to get a midsection as well. I said it was for a 1.4 not a 1.2 so it was dearer as there was a silncer in it, on the 1.2's theres only the backbox, no intermediate silencer.

The new centre section attached up to the CAT

all nice and shiny.

It was then a lot quieter, but it appeared the system on it was original so 13 years service wasn't to bad.

I drained and flushed the cooling system out. Well an initial flush anyway. It was orange but soon cleared out, the heater matrix took longer but it went clear eventually.

The heater now works pretty well, not super hot but pretty warm, its improving as the cars used, but it will be further flushed which will clean it out further and improve the heat output.

The radiator was taken out, blasted clean, both the fins and the indise, the temp needle now sits on the first notch instead of halfway between there and the halfway line, the engine temp can also be held there by the heaters. So thats good. A further clean out will get the rest of the crud out.

Left over night the coolant in the header tank was clear but when the hoses were squeezed or the engine run it went cloudy orange. Thats good, as it means its getting cleaner.

No pics. But I also blasted a lot of oil off of the block from the old leaky cam cover gasket problem.

23rd June

Today I changed the cambelt and tensioner, flushed the coolant again and washed the beast.

Busy day.

As you can see with the arch liners removed that theres a fair bit of oil about the place. Also note the charcoal canister rubber bands and how the tags are in them! Cable tied it in which is a lot more secure anyway.

Covers off, note oil, this all came from the cam cover gasket btw! As expected the belt was in a bad way saturated with oil and cracking.

bottom pulley off, poor pic but you can see the oil around it.

the covers, nice! They were thoroughly cleaned before refitting.

After I blasted the engine done. Far cleaned and a lot more pleasant to work on! Nice new belt fitted and tensioner.

after the clean with the new belt fitted, a lot better than the previous pic!

Old tensioner, looks good doesn't it! Only reason it looks so good was it was covered in oil! Had a lot of play in it

Old belt, renault oe gates effort, dunno if its the original or not.

No pics of the coolant flush or the car now its washed but a good day with good progress.

The car revs a lot better with the new cambelt on, timing is probably better. Quieter to.

Since the cambelt was changed the cars response is up a lot as is the performance, its also using a good bit less fuel, goes to show even slight changes in regards to timing can feck things up.

Todays task was to slap on some girling calipers.

Girlings on, discs were not changed, already the rust lines etc have gone.

crappy evil Bendix caliper

Braking has improved no end as expected. Before there was no way the brakes would lock and yes they exceded the minimum standards required by the MOT test. Now the wheels lock.

Still to do the back wheel cylinder - still.

14th July

Todays task was to replace the rear brake line and wheel cylinder on the nearside.

Heres the backplate with the old cylinder removed and shoes etc removed. Had to belt the thing out with a hammer as the corrosion had gripped the old cylinder tightly.

[img:567:378:17ebba4b21]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20ns%20cyl%2001.jpg[/img:17ebba4b21]

old cylinder off, fooked as you can see.

[img:567:378:17ebba4b21]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20ns%20cyl%2002.jpg[/img:17ebba4b21]

Anyway due to the mess of the backplate, paint coming off and rusty where the cylinder sits I thought take it off and clean it up

[img:567:378:17ebba4b21]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20ns%20cyl%2003.jpg[/img:17ebba4b21]

[img:567:378:17ebba4b21]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20ns%20cyl%2004.jpg[/img:17ebba4b21]

I then set about making up the new pipe. I had to make the green pipe from the copper one

[img:567:378:17ebba4b21]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20ns%20cyl%2005.jpg[/img:17ebba4b21]

and here we are

[img:567:378:17ebba4b21]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20ns%20cyl%2006.jpg[/img:17ebba4b21]

new pipe fitted and cleaned backplate on, not to shabby on the pipe location eh!

[img:567:378:17ebba4b21]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20ns%20cyl%2007.jpg[/img:17ebba4b21]

cleaned back plate on, no I never painted it, its a clio run about not a show car and new cylinder on

[img:567:378:17ebba4b21]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20ns%20cyl%2008.jpg[/img:17ebba4b21]

the back of the cylinder

[img:378:567:17ebba4b21]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio/clio%20ns%20cyl%2009.jpg[/img:17ebba4b21]

Full systems bled and brakes feel very good now. result.

And another job ticked off, only really to sort the back arches now.

5th August

SOLD!

I never bothered sorting the rear arches, the car was put in the paper for £500 and it sold for £475.

Roughly £250 in profit, that doesn't cover my labour but its nice all the same.

In 3 months the car covered roughly 2,200 miles. It was a good car but not as good as the 19!
