Well, I've not been around a while due to these, irritating problems...

Last month, my computer crashed and the motherboard blew... Lovely. So off I go to the computer shop (A local place near me) to buy a new one. (QDI one) Being a good customer over the years they offered to fit it free of charge, So after upgrading the ram to DDR I took it home. It crashed straight away the moment I opened the Start menu, so back I went. They swapped the Ram and the problem stopped. So once I got back online I started listening to music again, but oh dear. It started crashing again. I put it down to the processor being the only thing left on the board that hadn't been replaced previous to the last crashing incident. The new processor worked alright for a while but as you can guess, the same problems started to come back.
Last night I had a mess around with the bios settings, and royally fucked them up, so I took out the lithium battery (I couldn't be arsed finding the jumpers) and reset the bios to undo my silly changes and slapped it back in again. The funny thing was that seemed to fix it, that is until I rebooted the system and it's back again, only this time it crashes the moment that stupid MSN messenger opens (I did removed the battery several times to test it, even replaced it with another one I had, no change however).
Today I took the processor back to the shop (I was told to do so if this didn't fix the problem so they could refund it) they flat out refused to refund it, due to the fact I'd put paste on it (That's what you're meant to do I thought) and said bring in the system with all the relevant CD's and we'll go through it and fix it. The guy said there was a major problem with the Althlon XP compatitble QDI boards and they had to return the rest of the stock to QDI. But the saving grace was they'd refit a new board (hopefully not another duffer, or else I'll be back there once more Razz) and fix the relevant problems it is having.

I'm really not happy about the processor though it's not like I pissed it through with the paste either, and it's only a 2200XP mine was a 2100XP so it's not even a decent upgrade either. It's a good job they fitted everything though last time, or else they'd of probably refused to change it.

Right I was all up for helping you there but that’s more of a statement than a question. Best thing if you have these problems again is if you get the latest bios updates for your motherboard, drivers and latest service pack for whatever OS you are using.

I Changed the title, sorry Embarassed

Don't think it will happen again actually.

I did upgrade the OS and all the hardware, but I didn't upgrade the bios. As daft is it may sound that has always been something I've never wanted to do, I've always been a bit scared of fucking it up.

I'll let you know the outcome though, I'm not really a wiz on installation and the like. There was an explanation of what might of caused it, but it sounded like a load of bullshit to be honest.

There was one question though, what board would you recommend that takes DDR and is Athlon XP compatible? Don't want these stupid occurences again!

Id recommend Asus or Epox boards if you can afford them. Not really a fan of Abit anymore, but a lot of people are.

Something like the Asus A7N266/A7N8X or Epox 8RDA/8RGA would be a good choice... nForce/2 chipsets are good.

Much better off runnin a DKF 4300+/1, gives better performance than the similar 909Y for less money. NAAH compatible too

Keep with Abit. Update the bios, it is a fundamental component in the active running of your system. You are a titty if you can't do it. My three week old nail clippings can do it!

on the topic of bloody computers....my pc at home is acting up and i thought maybe one of u lovely boys may have more of a clue than me....

not long ago i downloaded that adaware and spybot software...and ran them and it got rid of a lot of nasties that had been lurking in the background...BUT...since doin that my internet explorer is playin up....i cannot go into the address bar and just type www.something.com (example)it comes up with an error in a separate window sayin address cannot be found...it only works if i type http:// in first which tbh is gettin rather annoying to type in everytime...

any ideas why this should be...ive gone into advanced optiopns and hit default no diff...?

any advice would be great!

cheers
